typhur sync gold performance x kamado grill

Ceramic Kamado grills are renowned for holding heat, ideal for low-and-slow cooking of meats like brisket, pulled pork, or ribs. But the catch is: how do you monitor the internal temperature of your meat without disturbing the cook?

Let’s banish the frustrations we all know:

✖ Wired thermometer nightmares – Regardless of how carefully I try to stay neat and organized, my probe thermometer’s line always gets kinked or tangled with others.

✖ Handheld thermometer headaches – The constant ritual of lifting the lid, temp-checking, and watching your hard-earned heat (10-30°F at whack!) go up in smoke – along with your hopes of perfect texture.

✖ Blues Bluetooth thermometer – When your signal dies as soon as you get inside to look in on how the game is going, and you find yourself wondering where your meat is.

It’s enough to make even the most seasoned pitmaster regret their choice. But what if there was another way?

Being a 100% wire-free thermometer with Sub-1GHz low-frequency transmission technology, the Typhur Sync Gold performs best on regular ovens and grills. But when pitted against ceramic Kamado grills that possess excellent heat retention, can it truly deliver on its promise of “penetrating ceramic without losing signal”? We conducted extensive testing, evaluating how well it performed in signal stability, temperature measurement speed, and accuracy to get a true picture of what it can deliver.

Performance of Typhur Sync Gold on Kamado Grills

For this hands-on review, we put the Typhur Sync Gold through its paces with our Masterbuilt Kamado Classic ceramic grill during an actual 14-hour brisket smoke and rib steak.

To test the probe’s signal range, we often went inside and used the app to monitor the meat’s progress. We also used the ice water bath to check the thermometer’s accuracy. During the entire test, we evaluated how easy it was to set up the meat probes, how the app performed, whether the thermometer was user-friendly, and whether it lost connection at any point.

1. Great Range

One of the toughest challenges facing wireless thermometers is maintaining a strong and consistent connection, especially when they are clipped to Kamado grills or other outdoor cooking setups. In trying to overcome this, the Typhur Sync Gold employs Sub-1GHz technology (915 MHz) to connect the base unit with the probes. The principle behind this is simple enough to grasp: lower frequency penetrates deeper. This means that signals below 1GHz are much more effective at penetrating ceramic walls of some thickness, metal, and even the walls in your house, compared to the higher-frequency signals like 2.4 GHz Bluetooth, which struggle more with signal penetration.

wireless thermometer transmission distance

In our practical testing, we found that the thermometer’s range was impressive. Without foil wrapping, the thermometer had a solid connection up to 820ft. But when we foiled the probe, the range fell to 82ft. The huge reduction in connection distance with foil wrapping shows just how much signal strength can be impacted by physical obstructions. As such, if you are to use the use of foil in cooking, we recommend exposing the ceramic tip of the probe to avoid signal blockage and get uniform readings.

2. Exceptional Precision

The Typhur Sync Gold takes accuracy to a new level with six sensors per probe—five internal temperature sensors and one ambient temperature sensor. The sensors are located in various positions throughout the meat so that the internal temperature can be read from a variety of positions, providing an overall temperature profile.

Exceptional Precision

In this, I must include the ambient temperature sensor. Since you may already know that the ambient temperature of your cooker is not evenly leveled, for accurate measurement of the real ambient temperature, Typhur has equipped Sync Gold with a fast-responding thermocouple material with a wider range of temperature. Additionally, the ceramic heat-conductive cap on top of the probe allows for faster temperature readings at the sensor.

They have also created an insulating shield at the position of safe line, reducing temperature gradients. By reducing the influence of heat convection and air flow in the cooking space, it offers the most accurate ambient temperature reading.

And, its Syncore algorithm gets even better in terms of accuracy by calculating the size and status of the meat (completely thawed, partially thawed, etc.) and ambient temperature. Its advanced system reads precisely to ±0.5°F, which is highly accurate for smoking and grilling.

To test the accuracy of the Typhur Sync Gold probes, I used them to measure the temperature of an ice water bath—a good old-fashioned test of the accuracy of a thermometer. An ice water bath’s temperature is always close to 32°F (0°C) and so, therefore, is the ideal stable and verifiable criterion for a test like this. With the test, we observed that Typhur Sync Gold reading in the ice water bath was 32.3°F and showed minimal deviation from the desired temperature and attesting to its excellent precision.

3. 100% Wire-Free: Removes all the tangled wires

Let’s cut through the marketing jargon – many so-called “wireless” thermometers aren’t truly wire-free. They’ll slap “wireless” on the box while still forcing you to deal with:

  • A wired ambient probe snaking through your grill vents
  • Clunky transmitters with dangling cables
  • The inevitable tangle when removing your food

Yet the Typhur Sync Gold is designed with 100% wire-free in mind, and there are no cables or external probes included. All the sensors you need are built into the unit itself so that you can enjoy a smooth, hassle-free cooking experience. You’ll never have to worry about extra wires getting tangled or fighting with awkward setups.

Typhur Sync Gold 100% Wire-Free

With Typhur Sync Gold, you have wireless convenience. It allows you to monitor the internal temperature of your food with no wires getting in the way or hanging around. Grilling, roasting, or smoking, the wireless design keeps your cooking area organized and neat, so it’s simpler for you to focus on getting your meal just right without the mess and hassle of wires.

4. Useful APP

The built-in WiFi in the base allows it to send data from probes to your phone when connected to your home Wi-Fi, enabling you to monitor the cook from anywhere.

But, more than that!

This is a useful and intuitive app. With the Typhur app, you get real-time temperature updates, alerts, and a temperature curve, giving you complete control over your cooking process. You’ll be notified instantly when your food reaches its target temperature, so you can focus on other tasks without having to constantly open the grill or smoker. In addition, the app provides ideal target temperatures for various meats, along with tips and tricks for achieving the perfect cook.

5. Long-lasting Battery

One of the most impressive features of the Typhur Sync Gold is its fast charging and ultra-long battery life. Whether you’re cooking for a few hours or all day, you won’t have to worry about your thermometer losing power in the middle of a cook.

The fast charging feature is incredibly convenient—just 2 minutes of charging provides up to 2 hours of usage, making it perfect for those quick cooking sessions when you need a boost. But what really stands out is the extended battery life of over 40 hours, allowing you to monitor your cook without the need for constant recharging.

In our 14-hour smoked brisket test, the Typhur Sync Gold performed flawlessly without needing to be charged in between. Even after hours of use, the thermometer maintained a steady connection and provided accurate readings the entire time. The base station also displays the remaining battery level, so you’re always aware of how much power is left, ensuring there are no surprises during long cooks.

With Typhur Sync Gold, you get both convenience and reliability—whether you’re doing a short cook or a marathon smoking session, the thermometer will last through it all without interruption.

The Verdict

The Typhur Sync Gold Wireless Meat Thermometer is among the best for anyone serious about precision cooking, especially with Kamado grills. This thermometer excels at providing consistent, stable signal and accuracy over extended cooking periods, especially in environments where traditional Bluetooth or Wi-Fi thermometers fail. Whether you’re grilling a brisket for several hours or roasting a whole chicken, the Typhur Sync Gold lets you monitor internal temperatures without having to constantly open the grill, retaining both the heat and flavor.

One of the Typhur Sync Gold’s best features is the way it ensures a strong connection in conditions that would otherwise lead to signal problems. With Sub-1GHz technology, it can easily go through metal surfaces and thick ceramic walls to give you real-time temperature readings up to 3000 feet in open area. The dual probes provide you with the capacity to monitor two cuts of meat simultaneously, ideal for those huge BBQ parties or when you’re cooking multiple kinds of meat. The Typhur Sync Gold also has excellent battery life, 40 hours of use, meaning you’ll be able to cook for hours without having to recharge.

But, as with anything, it has some drawbacks. The price will be higher than entry-level Bluetooth models, but the reliability, range, and twin probes make it worth it. There were also a couple of instances when the signal strength was marginally compromised due to aluminum foil covering on the probe, but that’s an easy solution by just ensuring the ceramic part of the probe is exposed. And, the bottom part of the device is slightly larger than in other models, which can be less convenient for those who desire a more portable unit.

How to Use Typhur Sync Gold on Kamado Grills

The Typhur Sync Gold is very easy to use. Just follow the instructions below:

1. Setup and Pairing the Device

Start by ensuring the Typhur Sync Gold probe(s) and base station are fully charged for a long-lasting connection. Next, pair the device with your smartphone or tablet using the Typhur app. While the app provides extra features like temperature curves and recipes, you can also track the temperature directly on the base station without using the app. Once set up, you’re ready to start cooking!

2. Insert the Probes into the Meat

Insert the dual probes into the thickest part of the meat for accurate readings. Ensure that the safety notch is fully inserted into the meat and not beyond the ceramic handle position. Then place the meat into your Kamado grill.

3. Set the Target Temperature

You can set the target temperature for your desired doneness directly from the base station, or you can use the app to select the ideal internal temperature for the type of meat you’re cooking.

4. Monitor the Cook

You will get alerts when your meat has reached the target temperature.

5. Rest Your Meat

Carefully remove the probes from the meat once the target temperature is reached. For most meats like brisket or pork shoulder, let the meat rest for 10-15 minutes. This step allows the juices to redistribute and makes the meat more tender and flavorful.

User Reviews and Feedback

The Gold Standard

— ForgottenCoastSmoke

So glad I gambled on this ‘new’ wireless thermometer. The Sync Gold Dual is hands down the best WiFi and wireless meat thermometer out there. Two probes that measure both the meat temp and the ambient temperature inside the grill. Just what I was looking for. Easy to setup and automatically pops up on my iPhone when I turn on the base unit. The app even runs in the background and shows up on the small active app screen on the very top of the screen when viewing another app. Love this thermometer, makes me want to smoke meat every day and find different meats to experiment with. Thanks Typhur!

Game Changing……Peace of Mind!

— MrFlavorsmith

Amazing Performance by this Wireless Heat Thermometer System! I walked from my backyard to the front of my house and down the street over 800 feet away to my mailbox with the Hub and it did not drop for one moment. This was impressive as it was stuck in the middle of a THICK Chuck Roast, Inside a Ceramic Kamado Grill! This was a long cook of over 6 hours and there was a moment when my wife told me I had to go pick up the boys from school right at the 3 hour mark. Normally this would not be something I do as I had not been able to monitor the cook away from my home. With the Ability it has to not only connect to the Hub but then the Hub connecting to your homes Wi-Fi Network allowed me to view the LIVE STATUS of the cook from my Cell Phone and even my Apple Watch. It gave me such a peace of mind that after picking the boys up I was able to also stop by the grocery store to pick up some other items for the family meal I was cooking. I am truly impressed by how reliable the connection is from the Heat Probes to the Hub and the Hub to my Wi-Fi, then to my Mobile Smart Devices. This is going to for sure up my confidence in cooking and make me feel better about cooking higher quality and more expensive cuts for this up coming holiday season!
